This thesis is a study of the image of tiger on traditional Chinese embroidery andother fabric arts, with an attempt to trace the origin of tiger arts, analyze its culturalconnotation and expound on the tiger’s folk symbolism throughout the Chinese history. An effort is also made to categorize distinctive styles of tiger arts and their geographicaldistribution, emphasizing the exploration of their unique features, adornment techniques, and aesthetic connotations, etc. In the meantime, we will delve into a discussion aboutthe value of this ancient art in modern society. This paper holds that if we integrate the essence of folk artists’ indigenous designinto contemporary fabric products, coupled with modern creative industry, we will standa good chance to acquire a broad market and revive this valuable and yet declining art.Nevertheless, it’s paramount that we guard against the possible degeneration anddilution of traditional cultural spirit in the tide of commercialization. Substantial as themarket value of the art may be, it deserves less of our reflection and exploration than thelasting, upgrading as well as enriching of the cultural connotation.
