In recent years, as the Ministry of Housing and Urban-rural Development demands that70%of the newly built housing units should only occupy about90square meters, the supply of small-sized housing units have been on the rise. With the accelerating urbanization and decreasing land resources for urban construction, small-sized housing units are needed to increase the total housing supply and reduce the waste of resourcea. Small units will be viable for a long period of time. Due to the limited space of small-sized housing units, once inappropriate furniture is placed inside, the units become cramped and messy. As a result, the adjustable function of furniture becomes important, giving rise to a new demand for the design of furniture.Storage furniture for small-sized units takes a wide range of forms and can solve the conflict between storing items and saving space. Compared with ordinary furniture, storage furniture has varied forms and multiple functions. They can be multipurpose. And they can be collapsible, built-in, on rollers and suspended. It features using minimum space to store maximum amount of things to avoid crampedness. Storage furniture is adjustable according to the space of housing units and the function one wants it to serve.This paper is intended to make a study of storage furniture suitable for small-sized housing units on the basis of the art of design.On the basis of the study of residents of small-sized housing units, the paper analyses the problem of limited inner space from the perspectives of environmental behavior, environmental psychology and human engineering, and suggests the use of storage furniture to solve the problem. In the chapter on the developments and functions of storage furniture, there are a comparative study of ordinary furniture and storage furniture and a detailed introduction of the functions of storage furniture. There is also a further argument that storage furniture is suitable for small-sized housing units. The fourth chapter makes a study of the design of storage furniture, including dimensions, shape, color and layout, and shows the realistic importance of storage furniture by analysing exemplary cases.
