Graphene(G) is a newly discovered carbon nanomaterial. Because of its large surface area, simple preparation methods, unique physical and chemical properties, graphene has become one of the new hot spots in the nanomaterial field, and has great potential in catalysis especially. In this paper, two kinds of composites (G-Pt and G-Au) were prepared conveniently by exploiting the nucleation of a metal precursor phase. The nanocomposites were characterized by transmission electron microscopy(TEM), X-ray diffraction(XRD), energy dispersive X-ray analysis(EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) respectively, and we further studied the catalytic abilities of the nanocomposites in the reduction and oxidation reactions.(1) G-Pt, in which the Pt nanoparticles were highly dispersed on the graphene sheet with average diameter2-3nm, was used as catalysts in the hydrogenation of a series of unsaturated hydrocarbons and nitroarenes. We optimized the reaction conditions on the reaction solvent and reaction time. Compared with Pt nanowires reported by our group, the G-Pt showed higher catalytic abilities.(2) G-Au, in which the Au nanoparticles were dispersed on the graphene sheet, was used as catalysts in the oxidation of alcohols. We optimized the reaction conditions on the reaction solvent and oxidant. The G-Au showed favorable catalytic activity in the oxidation of alcohols to the corresponding carbonyl compounds.
