GH-LCDs have a lot of advantages, such as displaying information in bright colour, high brightness, wide viewing angle, good contrast ratio, fast response speed and low threshold voltage. Fluorescent dyes based on GH-LCDs have been considered as a less energy consuming, a better colour and brightness display for portable electronics. So it’s important both in theory and practice to develop novel fluorescent dichroic dyes.A series of new dyes (M) containing4-bromine-1,8-anhydride naphthalene had been designed, synthesized and evaluated. Spectroscopic tests of those compounds exhibited that these dyes emitted yellow-green fluorescence at491-520nm and had high quantum yields (0.77). Those dyes suggested positive fluorescent dichroism, when dispered in LC E7, SA, SF which were up to0.59,0.45, respectively. Dye M5and LC E7mixtures by photoelectric tested showed that, threshold voltage and response time have obviously changes.A series of new dyes (J) with the higher solubility containing the4-bromine-1,8-anhydride naphthalene had been designed, synthesized and evaluated. Spectroscopic tests showed that these dyes emitted yellow fluorescence at509-525nm and had high quantum yields (0.76). J dyes showed positive fluorescent dichroism, when in LC E7, SA, SF were up to0.51,0.41, respectively. Dye J2and LC E7mixtures by photoelectric tested show that, threshold voltage and response time have obviously changes.
