Fire-retardant coating is widely used in the areas of industry and life, theenvironmental safe of it has become the focus of attention with the awarenessof health and environmental protection. In this paper, we study on thepisonous and harmful substances in building fire-retardant coating andestablish related detection methods which are used to test the collectedsamples. The major research as follows:1. Volatile organic compounds in building fire-retardant coatings weredetected by GC/MS. Higher level contents were analysed using NIST.Volatiles are mainly benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene and C9-C11hydrocarbon. The total volatile organic compounds are beteen403~612g/L.2. A method for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of benzenehomologues in building fire-retardant coatings was established by gaschromatography-mass chromatogram. Dilution solvent, internal standard andGC/MS conditions were discussed. The results were reliable, recovery was85.3%~115.6%and RSD was0.8%~6.2%. The benzene homologues of10fire-retardant coating samples were determined using the proposed method. 3. Acetylacetone spectrophotometry was used for the measurement of theconcentration of formaldehyde in fire-retardant coatings. The impact oftemperature on analysis result was investigated. The linear range offormaldehyde was0~80μg, the correlative was0.9997, the recovery was92.73%~99.55%and RSD was less than1.5%. The method was rapid, sensitive and proved to be suitable for determination of free formaldehyde inbuilding fire-retardant coatings.4. The soluble heavy metals and radioactivity in fire-retardant coatingwere studied. The soluble heavy metals were analysed by atomic absorptionspectrometry, radioactivity was detected by low background multi-channelgamma spectrometer. Experimental results of them accord with the nationallimits.
