At present, the waterbome intumescing fire-retardant coating are extensively used in the opera houses ,gymnasiums, high buildings and so on. But it also has the problem of the water-resistance and fire-retardant performances. In this paper, highly effective and multifunctional waterborne intumescing fireproofing coatings for wood structure was studied.The analysis methods such as thermogravimetry (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) was chosen to measure the thermal properties of the fire retardants and the base latex .Based on the above results, the flame retardant mechanism was also studied. The results of TG and DTA show that ,in the whole intumescing process ,APP, PER and MEL cooperated with each other and synergism is generated. We also selected the kind of the base latex. It was considered that the synthesis performance was best when the styrene-acrylic latex mixed with silica sol cooperate with the P-N-C.The evaluating indicator such as the coatings' fire retardant performance and mechanical properties were chosen to evaluate the influence of the proportion of base latex to the fireproofing performance of the fire-retardant coatings; it was considered that the prim ratio of it was 40%, when the fireproofing property was best. Base on the above results, the orthogonal experiments of the fire-retardant system was also applied, and the coatings' fire-proofing time was chosen as the evaluating indicator. We used the L9(34) orthogonal method to optimize the fire- retardant system. It was show that the value of APP, PER and MEL was distinctly 30g, 5g and 20g.The influence of the pigment to the fire-retardant performance of the coating was also studied. It was considered that the synthesis performance was best when the proportion of pigment in the system was 6%. We selected the hexa-sodium metaphosphate as the dispersing agent of the coating, methyl silicone oil as the antifoaming agent, and the carboxymethyl cellulose as the thickeners.Two thermal-analysis methods were chosen to study the thermal analysis apparatus and pyrolysis course of the dried coating layer. Based on the analysis of the thermodynamic model,we have obtained the thermodynamic parameter of the fire retardant. According to the results, the characters between the two thermal-analysis methods was also studied.
