Biological activated carbon (BAC) treatment of landfill leachate wasinvestigated experimentally and the degradation effect was compared with the SBR(Sequencing Batch the Reactor) treatment of landfill leachate. The parameters werefocused on: influence of water quality on the SBR system, the influent pH and theBAC dosage. A series of experiments were conducted to verify the feasibility of BACtreatment of landfill leachate. The results showed that:1. The effluent of SBR treatment of landfill leachate contains plenty of organicpollutants that are biologically undegradable, which has little effect on the SBRsystem. The pH values have greater impact on the normal operation of the SBRsystem.2. The periodical removal rate of COD in landfill leachate by SBR alone was10%-15%. While the periodical removal efficiency of COD by BAC technologyachieved35%-45%, which was significantly better than the single SBR process.Therefore, it can be seen that BAC technology is superior to the single SBRtechnology in treating organic wastewater.3. The periodical removal rate of COD in landfill leachate with BAC technologyafter stable operation could reach45%. The same quality of activated carbonadsorption experiments showed a periodical removal rate of COD in landfill leachateof about32%. It is indicated that BAC technology is better than single activatedcarbon absorption technology in treating landfill leachate and has a more stable waterquality of effluent.4. BAC technology with the addition of300g BAC running for some time,theperiodical removal rate of COD in landfill leachate achieved about45%, which isapproximately equal to the sum of the single SBR and granular activated carbonadsorption42%(10%+32%). But the trend line reveals the BAC technology is betterthan the SBR and GAC, which shows the superiority of the BAC process on landfillleachate treatment.
