In this paper, a cashew-based Gemini surfactant was synthesized from cashew phenol,1,3-dibromopropane and chlorosulfonic acid through etherification, sulfonation and neutralization. The optimum reaction conditions were determined by single-factor method. Active matter content of cashew-based Gemini surfactant was determined by the two-phase titration method. The results showed that, cashew-based Gemini surfactant had high purity. The structures of intermediate and product were characterized by FT-IR and1H NMR. The surface tension and critical micelle concentration (cmc) were measured by drop volume method, the surface activity of the cashew-based Gemini surfactant solution was measured compared with the corresponding monomeric surfactant. The results showed that the cmc for the cashew-based Gemini surfactant and corresponding monomeric surfactant were6.2×10-2mmol·L-1and8.40mmol·L-1respectively. The surface tension at its critical micelle concentration (γcmc) were36.92mN·m-1and38.41mN·m-1, far lower than that of corresp-ondding monomeric one. Through calculating results showed that the maximum adsorption (Γmax) and the minimum surface area (Amin) were (6.16×10-10mol/cm,0.67×10-10mol/cm) and (0.27nm2,2.47nm2) respectively. Furthermore, we also determined the surface activity, foam property, wetting property, salt resistance, interfacial tension, emulsification property and displacement performance, the results showed that the synthesized novel cashew-based Gemini surfactant has good performance properties.
