In the paper two kinds of waterborne epoxy-acrylic hybrid emulsion using grafted emulsion copolymer and ring-opening esterification were studied, which were prepared with epoxy resin and acrylate monomers.Epoxy-acrylic composite emulsion were prepared by grafted emulsion polymerization, in which the mixture of anionic surfactant CO-436, DSB and reactive surfactant AOPS-1, AE-100was used as emulsifiers. The influence of the amount of emulsifiers, epoxy resin and initiator on the polymerization conversion was investigates. The result shows that the optimum conditions were as follows:copolymerization temperature was85℃, the amount of the compound emulsifiers (AOPS-1/AE-100/CO-436/DSB as2/2/2/1) was13%, the initiator dosage was0.8%, the mass ratio of epoxy and acrylate monomers was7:3. The emulsion particle size was172.9nm.E-51epoxy resin molecule configuration can be rebuilt by ring-opening esterification. The double bonds were introduced into E-51by ring-opening esterification, which was copolymerization by acrylate monomers to form the epoxy-acrylic aqueous system. The influence of reactants amount on the modified E-51was studied. The optimum raw materials formulation, reaction temperature, catalyst and inhibitor were finalized, the amount of catalyst was0.85%, the reaction temperature was95℃, the molar ratio of MAA and E-51was1:1.05, and the reaction time was2.5hours. Under the optimum conditions, the esterification conversion rate reached98.9%. The structure of the modified E-51was characterized by using of infrared spectrum.The modified E-51containing C=C unsaturated double bonds can participate in copolymerization with acrylate monomers. The influence of the amount of emulsifiers, epoxy resin and initiator on the polymerization conversion was investigates. The results showed that the use of CO-436/DSB was4/1,the dosage was8%,initiator dosage was0.8%, the mass ratio of MMA and BA was1:1. Finally the obtained emulsion pencil hardness was3H, the emulsion was characterized by the fine appearance and good stability.
