In1965, the concept of functional materials was defined by Dr J. A. Morton, a memberof bell laboratories in USA. Functional materials are those complexes with excellent electrical, magnetic, optical, thermal, acoustic, mechanical, chemical and biology medical characters, which can be used to produce function components that are widely used in the field of hightechnology. These topics have attracted widely spread attentions in the past decades. The thesis focuses on the syntheses of new functional materials based onmetal-ligand complexes. New metal coordinated photochromic and base-catalyzedmaterials are prepared via the design of basic constructed units. Related experimentalresults are listed as follows:1. A new photochromic coordination network [Zn3(CPBPY)2(p-BDC)2.5(OH)]·5H2O(1) is constructed via the combination of viologen and carboxylate fragments. Closepacking of the two-fold diamond-like interwoven mode creates the electron transferbridges for the acceptor and donor components. Radicals are generated uponphotoirradiation accompany with a color change from yellow to blue-green.2. A close-packed2D thermally stable photochromic metal organic framework[Cd(CPBPY)(m-BDC)]·H2O (2) is obtained with CPBPY and m-BDC asconnectors[CPBPY=N-(3-carboxyphenyl)-4,4-bipyridinium, BDC=benzenedicarboxylate].The aggregations build an interesting stable crystalline framework showing long lived colorconstancy. Repeating cycles of reversible color changes are observed for the molecular switchin air upon photoirradiation.3. A new stable mixed-ligand metal organic framework Zn2(TPT)-2(2-atp)I2(TPT=tris (4-pyridyl) triazine,2-atp=2-aminoterephthalate) with split channels has beensynthesized and characterized. The Knoevenagel condensation reaction was carried outusing compound3as solid base catalytic support. It gives high catalytic efficiency84.6%for Knoevenagel condensation. PXRD data support that the catalyst remains itscrystalline and framework stability after the catalysis process. These characters make iteasily to be regenerated for the next cycle.
