Zizania latifolia activate carbon (ZLAC) and leather activate carbon(LAC) were prepared respectively from a perennial aquatic plant zizania latifolia and leather by H3PO4activation. And the activate carbons were characterized and tested for basic fuchsin adsorption capacities. On the basis of Zizania latifolia and leather activated carbons, adsorption of basic fuchsin (BF) on Mn(Ⅱ) modified activated carbons and original carbon was investigated respectively. The effects of experimental parameters such as dosage, contact time and pH on the adsorption were investigated. The adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics were also discussed for explaining adsorption mechanism. The preparation condition of ZLAC was at a H3PO4concentration of45%, an impregnation ratio of2.5:1, an impregnation time of12h, an activated temperature of450℃, and an activated time of1h. And the preparation condition of LAC was at a H3PO4concentration of45%, an impregnation ratio of1:1, an impregnation time of3h, an impregnation temperature of105℃, an activated temperature of450℃, and an activated time of1h. The activated carbons have a rough surface with irregular pores, and some oxygen functional groups such as hydroxyl, carboxylic, and carbonylic groups were distributed in the activated carbons. After modified of Mn(Ⅱ), adsorption capacities of activated carbons have improved, the adsorption capacities of BF on ZLAC increased from135.14to238.10mg/g, while the adsorption on LAC rose from139.28to182.48mg/g.The pH of solution had no influence on the adsorption of BF to ZLAC and ZLAC-Mn, but the adsorption on LAC and LAC-Mn were highly pH dependent, and reached maximum in alkaline conditions. Compared to the pseudo-first-order kinetic model, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model is more appropriate to describe the adsorption process. And the intraparticle diffusion process is not the only control procedure. Thermodynamics results showed that the Langmuir isotherm equation can describe the adsorption isotherms. The adsorption processes is a spontaneous and endothermic process.
