The Houguanyinshan ore block of Hemushan iron mine is the main producing mine of Gushan mine company, belonging to Magang (Group) Holding Company Ltd. And the sublevel open stope mined by subsequent backfilling mining method has caused serious loss and dilution of ore, which resulted in waste of resources, and poor security. Therefore, it is necessary to choose more appropriate mining method in order to make use of resources more efficiently and safely.In this study, the mathematical method and large-scale simulation software MIDAS were used to probe the optimization of mining method selections as well as stope structure parameters. The main research was as follows:(1) The rock mechanical parameters were obtained by the field investigation on the geological conditions of Houguanyinshan orebody, data collection, rock sampling and rock mechanical test.(2) The effect of joint distribution on rock mass quality and stability was analyzed through statistics of the joint spacing and occurrence distribution data based on rock joint investigation and analysis.(3) Based on the local mining conditions, a mining method with high production capacity, safety, economy and efficiency was given by drawing mining methods in similar mines, then optimal programs were obtained by mathematical method.(4) The stope stress and displacement were calculated and analyzed by using the MIDAS simulation software. And the stope stability was investigated, thereby determining the reasonable stope structure parameters.(5) The single design of mining program was performed according to the optimized mining programs. The on-site industrial tests were also conducted.The results show that an appropriate mining method and reasonable stope structural parameters can be obtained by incorporating the theoretical analysis, investigation and statistics, laboratory tests, program design and on-site industrial tests, which would lead to a good economic effect and also provide a new method for similar mines.
