The synthesis and characterization of latex particles with various butdefined morphologies have attracted great attentions in these days.Core/shell latex particle is one of the most concerned groups of thevarious composite particles because it shows unique properties and hasbeen widely used in many applications, especially in coatings, adhesives,plastics and bio-techniques, et al.In present dissertation several kinds of acrylate-styrene latex particleswith core/shell structure were synthesized and characterized. The mainfactors of the core/shell structure, especially in the latex practices withcomplicated polymer of core and shell, were studied by TOPEM-DSCtechnology. Meanwhile, the film formation process of the multilayercore/shell emulsion was investigated by AFM technology. The mainresearch works are as follows.(1) Synthesis and characterization of polystyrene/polyacrylate core/shellemulsion. PSt/PBA and PSt/P(BA-MMA) emulsion were synthesized viaseeded semi-continuous emulsion polymerization and the structures ofthese latex particles were characterized by TEM, AFM. Meanwhile, more fine structures were characterized by TOPEM-DSC, which verify theexistence of interfacial region and we can obtained its composition andcontent.(2) Synthesis and characterization of poly(acrylate-styrene)/poly(acrylate-styrene) core/shell emulsion. P(BA-MMA-St)/P(BA-MMA-St) core/shell emulsion was synthesized via seededsemi-continuous emulsion polymerization. The main factors of thecore/shell structure such as hard and soft phase, the glass trastion, thecopolymerization of hydrophilic monomers and the differenttemperatures for film formation were studied by TOPEM-DSC.(3) Synthesis and film formation properties of multilayer core/shellpoly(acrylate-styrene) emulsion. The emulsion was synthesized viaseeded semi-continuous emulsion polymerization of layer-by-layerincrement. The film formation properties, the effect of crosslinkingmonomer and ratio of core and shell on film formation were investigatedby AFM.
