With the increase of discarded automobiles and household appliances year after year, how to efficiently deal with recycling metal has gradually aroused people’s attention. It is more important to recycle and reuse metal resources in the environment deteriorating and resource-poor age. The objective of the study on shredding mechanism and shredding models of thin metal scrap (wall thickness less than or equal to10mm) is to find solutions to recovery and reuse of end-of-life vehicles and household appliances (ELV and ELHA).The ductile fracture criterion, which applies to the shredding of thin metal scrap, is studied and found out from the perspective of ductile fracture of metal material as one part of study on shredding mechanism and shredding models of thin metal scrap. The main work of the paper is below:The principal mechanical properties of selected thin metal scrap, which provide true and correct data for the following research work, were obtained through uniaxial tensile test. The shredded effects in different counterweights were obtained by using the pendulum impact testing machine. The fracture criterion, which could be used in study the failure of thin metal scrap, was explored in the fracture mechanics and damage mechanics. Through analysis of the impact test results, several ductile fracture criterions based on damage mechanics were screened and the research method was also determined. The uniaxial tensile test and impact test are simulated by the finite element analysis software ABAQUS. The selected ductile fracture criterions were added to the simulation process of impact test respectively, and the accuracy and applicability of the selected criterions are evaluated and compared by the comparison of simulation results and test results. The research of the paper provide reference bases for the following research work, such as shredding test equipment research and development.
