Phthalates and adipates have been added in cosmetics as a solvent and perfumefixative. In recent years, a large number of research reports and toxicology testsconfirmed that these two kinds of substances can pose a threat to human health. This article focuses on the application of the chromatographic analysistechniques in the detection of cosmetic ingredients. Respectively, by liquidchromatography, gas chromatography and gas chromatography mass/spectraassociated with the separation and determination of19kinds of harmful ingredients incosmetics. The main content is as follows:A high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method had been developedfor the simultaneous determination of twelve phthalates in cosmetics. Samples wereextracted with methanol by ultrasonic, centrifuged, and the upper clear layer wasfiltrated through membrane with0.45μm diameter. Phthalates were separated on aC18column and analyzed with elution employing acetonitrile as mobile phase, anddetected by a photodiode array detector with the detection wavelength224nm. Theflow rate was1.2mL/min.The linear range were1~80μg/mL, R2≥0.9995, thedetection limits were between0.22~0.79mg/kg, the recovery between87.5~103.5%and RSD less than5%. The method is simple, rapid, accurate, and can meet thepractical requirements samples analysis.A method was established for the determination of14phthalates and5adipatesin cosmetics by GC/FID. The target analytes were extracted from cosmetic sampleswith hexane, cleaned up with an AL-N column. The extracts were quantitativelyanalyzed by GC/FID and using the internal standard method. The calibration curveswere linear in the ranges of1~40μg/mL. The limits of detection are from0.09mg/kgto1.20mg/kg. The recoveries are89.5~109.6%and the RSD less than5%. Theseresults show that this method is sensitive, accurate and suitable for the quantitative determination of phthalates and adipates in cosmetic products.A method for the simultaneous determination of fourteen phthalates and fiveadipates in cosmetics by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) coupledwith AL-N solid phase extraction (SPE) was developed. The target analytes wereextracted from cosmetic samples with hexane, cleaned up with an AL-N column. Theextracts were quantitatively analyzed by GC/MS in selective ion monitoring (SIM)mode and using the internal standard method. The correlation coefficients of thecalibration curves are0.9973~1.0000in the ranges of0.5~40μg/mL. The limits ofdetection are from0.03mg/kg to0.15mg/kg. The recoveries are87.3~107.9%and therelative standard deviations (RSD, n=6) ranged from0.75%to5.93%. These resultsshow that this method is sensitive, accurate and suitable for the Qualitative andquantitative determination of phthalates and adipates in cosmetic products.
