Indoor environment pollution seriously affects people’s life and work. It is significant todevelop a kind of antibacterial deodorant which can remove volatile organic compounds butalso kill bacteria. In this paper, two types of antibacterial deodorants (P-AC and Ag/AC) wereprepared via oxidized modification of coconut shell activated carbon (AC) as carrier, andsequently self-assembly of polymer quaternary ammonium salt (PEQA) and nano-silver,respectively. The as-prepared deodorants were also characterized by FTIR spectra, ASAP andSEM. And adsorption performance for toluene as model VOCs was studied in detail. Inaddition, antibacterial property to E.coli, ATCC and air natural bacteria were measured. Theconclusions are as follows:1. Compared to AC, acid groups on the oxidized AC surface increase while phenolicgroups reduce. There is an obvious characteristic peak at1480cm-1on the surface of P-AC,indicating that PEQA has been successfully loaded on the AC surface.2. P-AC deodorants show the decreasing toluene adsorption capacity and increasingantibacterial property with the increasing concentration of PEQA. Moreover, P-ACdeodorants have better antibacterial property to E.coli than ATCC. Moreover, they can purifypolluted air to health level. However, P-AC deodorants can’t kill stubborn strains in the air. Bycomparison, P-AC2has the best performances. For example, it has17.8%qmaxof toluene(0.13g/g) less than AC. When100mg P-AC2is put into E. coli solution with the initialconcentration of107CFU·mL-1, the anterbacterial rate is about95%after2hours.3. There is an obvious signal peak of elemental silver near3.0kev, indicating that silveris successfully immobilized on activated carbon. When silver content is less then1.65%,silver particles are in nano-meter state.4. AC/Ag deodorants show the similar adsorption performance to P-AC series products. They also have better antibacterial property to E.coli than ATCC. By comparison, theantibacterial property of AC/Ag deodorants is much better than P-AC deodorants.Furthermore, their antibacterial property is broad-spectrum. Considering that the antibacterialdeodorants should have high adsorption capacity as well as good antibacterial property, AC/Ag2is the best antibacterial deodorant. For instance, AC/Ag2has13.3%qmaxof toluene(0.137g/g) less than AC. When100mg AC/Ag2is put into E. coli solution with the initialconcentration of107CFU·mL-1, the antibacterial rate is about95%after1.5hours.
