A series of NdCl3-ether (ethylene glycol dimethyl ether, Bis(2-methoxyethyl) ether, crown ethers) compounds were synthesized and applied to diene polymerization. The composition and structure of the obtained compounds were characterized by element analysis and FTIR. After activated with alkylaluminium, the NdCl3·ether could be used in diene polymerization. The effect of polymerization condition on butadiene and isoprene polymerization behaviors was investigated and the formation mechanism of active species is discussed primarily. According to the research, the polymerization behaviors of NdCl3·ether compounds were observed. The composition of the compounds and the polymer structure were studied by EA, GPC, FTIR, NMR. It was found that the NdCl3·ether have catalytic activities for the polymerization of diene, the obtained rubber shows high cis-1,4content (polyisoprene:94~97%, polybutadiene:97~99%) and high molecular weight (Mn of polyisoprene:14×104~27×104, Mn of polybutadiene:10×104~25×104). The molecular weight and microstructure of the obtained polymer could be controlled through changing polymerization condition. When ethylene glycol dimethyl ether as ligand, the compound exhibit good activity toward diene polymerization after activated by alkylaluminium/MAO mixture. In addition, the compound was synthesized from NdaO3(cheap), thus reducing the production costs considerably. On the other hand, NdCl3·ether compound added a new type of rare-earth catalyst and provides a theoretical basis for the research of diene polymerization mechanism and related microstructure of obtained polymer.
