Lubricant can reduce mechanical friction, slow down the fret, cooling, cleaning and prevent pollution. In a long history, it has great significance in economic and ecological. However, with the development of the technology, the conventional lubricant can not fit the requirements of modern machinery. The preparation of high-performance base oil become the focus of modern lubricant research. In lots of synthetic base oils, poly-alpha-olefin (PAO) become the most promising synthetic lubricant because its excellent performance, rich source of raw materials, cheap and widely used.In this paper, a PAO with nice performance was prepared. The reaction conditions are as follows:raw material1-decene, catalyst AlCl3/TiCl4, reaction temperature40℃, catalyst mass fraction in the reactants5%, Al/Ti mole ratio1:1, reaction time4h. The40℃kinematic viscosity of the product is100.33mm2·s-1; the100℃kinematic viscosity of the product is14.94mm2·s-1; the viscosity index is155.80; the pour point is-62℃.The impact of reaction conditions on performance were discussed. The result shows: the kinematic viscosity increases with the increase of raw materials molecular weight, reaction temperature, catalyst mass fraction, Al/Ti mole ratio; the viscosity index increases with the increase of raw materials molecular weight and catalyst mass fraction, with the decrease of reaction temperature and Al/Ti mole ratio.; the pour point increases with the increase of raw materials molecular weight, reaction temperature, catalyst mass fraction, Al/Ti mole ratio.The reaction process was characterized by the React IRTM analytical system. The result confirmed this reaction is a double bond reduced oligomerization. The product was characterized by H NMR and C NMR, the structure of the product was deduced; the results of gel chromatography showed that the product close to normal distribution, and the width of the distribution is narrow; the TG results showed thermal decomposition of the product was high, which indicated the product had nice thermal stability.A C30molecule was taken for example to research molecular modeling. The performances of poly-alpha-olefin base oil under fluid lubrication and boundary lubrication were discussed. The result showed, in fluid lubrication, poly-alpha-olefin base oil has nice performance; in boundary lubrication, poly-alpha-olefin base oil performs not good enough, so EP-antiwear additive needs to add under harsh boundary lubrication conditions.
