Stainless steel has some advantages such as high strength, high stiffness,corrosion resistance, good wear resistance, wide range of temperatures. Therefore ithas been widely applied in the field of aerospace, petrochemical, metallurgical andfood. However, stainless steel is a typical difficult-to-machine material, how toimprove the surface quality of stainless steel is a major technical problem. It hasbecome an important factor to restrict the application of stainless steel.Due to its cutting characteristics, it is difficult to improve surface quality ofstainless steel by conventional turning. The ultrasonic vibration turning is atechnology in which the regular ultrasonic vibration with a certain frequency and theamplitude is applied to the cutting tool, so that the cutting tool can periodicallycontact and separate from the workpiece during the cutting process. Due to itsseparation characteristics of the ultrasonic vibration turning, the cutting force isdecreased significantly, the cutting tool can be used longer and the surface quality ofthe workpiece is improved.In this paper, the cutting mechanism of the ultrasonic vibration turning wasanalyzed in detail. Ultrasonic vibration turning system was designed for machiningstainless steel, and the main vibration components of the system were simulated bythe finite element modal analysis. The vibration components were amended to achievethe desired results through the simulation analysis. The main content of paper is asfollows:1、A comprehensive understanding of ultrasonic vibration turning technology atdomestic and abroad was reviewed in this paper based on literature review. Theprinciple of ultrasonic vibration turning was studied, and the force conditions of thecutting area were analyzed.2、 This paper proposed a ultrasonic vibration assisted turning system formachining stainless steel. Ultrasonic vibration system as well as key part horn isdesigned in order to meet the vibration requirements in turning.3、Based on the modal analysis and harmonic response analysis of the finiteelement method with ANSYS, the horn is modified by optimization design, anddimension of horn is more reasonable.4、According to precision machining requirements of stainless steel parts, the ultrasonic-vibration assisted turning device is designed.
