Membrane aeration bioreactor (MABR) is a new type of sewage treatmenttechnology, which combined gas separation membrane technology with biologicalwastewater treatment technology. It has caught a lot of attention because of theexcellent properties in treating wastewater. The hollow fiber membrane, as the coresection of MABR, is the most important factor to influence the performance ofMABR. And the shortage of special membrane for MABR has become a limitation ofthe application and development of MABR. In this paper, the surface modificationtechnology was taken to change the intrinsic properties of PVDF hollow fibermembrane. The properties of this new composite membrane were analyzed, and thebest coating condition was fixed. The further research about biofilm growth and CODremoval was also taken to examine the ability of this new membrane in MABR.First, the PANI-PVDF hollow fiber membrane was prepared through theinterfacial polymerization. The properties of this membrane under different coatingconditions (doping/dedoping) were researched. The results showed that the membranewith dedoping condition had a better performance. In the biofilm growth experiment,the thickness of biofilm also showed the modified membrane played a better work inMABR.Under the analysis of the advantages and shortcomings of interfacialpolymerization and PANI, the better method was proposed. The Poly (DOPA)-PVDFhollow fiber membrane was prepared though the self-polymerization of DOPA. Thebest coating conditions (concentration, coating time, and processing temperature)were fixed. And the results showed that the gas flux, hydrophily, and surfaceroughness were significant improved after the modification process. In the biofilmgrowth and COD removal experiments also proved the outstanding ability in theapplication of MABR.
