The effect of the irrigation of secondary effluent on the physio-chemicalcharacteristics and residue of contaminants was studied by the soil columnexperiment with periodic sampling in the soil contaminated by the polycyclicaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Shen-fu irrigation area, and the amount ofsecondary effluent was controlled by the land use type (the glebe, paddy field andvegetable field). The results were as follows: compared with that of the irrigation ofclear water, the effect of irrigation of secondary effluent was not significant on theheavy-metal concentrations, the number and biodiversity of bacteria in thecontaminated soils, with significantly decrease of pH and increase of conductivity;the effect of the irrigation of secondary effluent on the PAHs was influenced by theresidual amount of PAHs and the type of land use in the contaminated soil: theresidue of PAHs decreased significantly, dominated by3and6rings PAHs, inKanghong soil irrigated by the glebe water demand, which attributed to the decreaseof PAHs in the humic acid and fulvic acid fractions, and was not significantly inSanbaotun soil. Therefore, the glebe could be the good alternative in the agriculturalfield of Shen-fu irrigation area, and the decrease of pH and increase of conductivityshould be controlled during the the irrigation of secondary effluent. These resultswould provide the theoretics guidance on the reuse of the secondary effluent and theagriculture management in the Shen-fu irrigation area.
