As the development of printing technology and the trend of high-grade paperproduct, paper should have better properties. Surface sizing compared to internalsizing have many advantages such as simple production process, good retention, noinfluence to wet end and so on. These factors promote the development of papersurface sizing agent. The using of styrene-acrylic copolymer emulsion as surfacingagent have many advantages such as low cost, simple production process, goodfilm-forming performance and so on. Because of these advantages styrene-acrylicemulsion surface agent has a good development. However the domestic researchstarted late, styrene-acrylic emulsion has poor water resistance and stability.Nowadays styrene-acrylic emulsion was prepared with ordinary emulsifier. Butstyrene-acrylic emulsion prepared with ordinary emulsifier has poor water resistanceand stability. To solve these problems I did following research.First, I prepared styrene-acrylic micro soap-containing emulsion withpolymerizable emulsifier. The influence of different polymerizable emulsifier onstyrene-acrylic emulsion properties was studied. I found that the properties ofstyrene-acrylic micro soap-containing emulsion prepared with SE-10and NP-10emulsifier were very good. The influence of amount of emulsifier and ratio ofemulsifier on styrene-acrylic micro soap-containing emulsion properties was studied.The experimental results showed that when the amount of emulsifier was2.5%andthe ratio of SE-10emulsifier to NP-10emulsifier was2to1the properties ofstyrene-acrylic micro soap-containing emulsion were the best.The synthesis process and formula of styrene-acrylic emulsion were optimized.Pre-emulsified semi-continuous seed emulsion polymerization method was used toprepare styrene-acrylic emulsion. The weight ratio of hard monomer to soft monomer,initiator, self-crosslinking and functional monomer on emulsion properties wereinvestigated respectively. The experimental results showed that when the weight ratioof hard monomer to soft monomer was1to1, the amount of initiator was0.3%, the amount of N-MA was2.5%and the amount of AA was3%the properties ofstyrene-acrylic emulsion were the best. Several testing methods such as FT-IR,Malvern Zetasizer Nano particle size analyzer were adopted to characterize theemulsion.At last, the application of styrene-acrylic micro soap-containing emulsion assurface sizing agent was studied. The emulsion was mixed with anionic starch assurface sizing agent to size copy base paper. The experimental results showed that theemulsion used as surface sizing agent had good sizing efficiency.
