Recent years, with the development of the automobile industry, automotive filters havebeen put forward higher requirements. Fire accident on engine occurred frequently due tocylinder tempering and absorption of combustible matter by air filter, and higher request onthe flame retardant property of air filter paper was necessary. But now, in domestic market, most of such products are use additive flame retardant, these products have many issues, suchas flame retardant performance not durable, flame retardant inefficient, and pollution theenvironment. With the continuous improvement of people’s awareness of environmentalprotection and energy saving, these products have been increasingly unable to meet the needsof the market, but reactive flame retardant filter paper basically only relying on imports tomeet the requirements. The core content of the paper is to develop a performance reactivewater-based flame retardant modified epoxy resin, and use it to impregnate air filter paper, inorder to endow the filter paper good physical properties and flame retardant. Main researchcontents and achievements were as follows:Firstly, the preparation plan of the water-based flame retardant modified epoxy should beexplored and selected. On one hand, optimize the process by examining the impact of thereaction temperature, time, the amount of catalyst, flame retardant, aqueous modifiers, theamount of the neutralizers, solvent and the inversion stirring rate, etc. to the preparation. Onthe other hand, infrared spectroscopy, particle size analyzer, transmission electron microscopy(TEM), limiting oxygen index tester and thermal gravimetric analyzer can be used tocharacterize the structure and properties of flame retardant modified resin and the resinemulsion. Test results show that the modified resin, storage stable, uniform particle sizedistribution have good flame retardant properties and can be used on impregnated filter papertogether with curing agent.Secondly, the preparation and application of waterborne epoxy curing agent. On onehand, by examining the order of addition, the reaction of temperature and time and the degreeof influence on the preparation process to optimize the preparation scheme. The curing agentwas tried to blending water-based directly resin and emulsified retardant modified resin. Theemulsified process is optimized by examining the impact of the amount of curing agent, the degree of neutralization and the inversion process. Infrared spectroscopy, particle sizeanalyzer, and the limiting oxygen index tester to characterize the blending and emulsifyingsystem are utilized to impregnate filter paper. The tests show that the curing agent, blends andemulsifying system are well water-soluble and storage stability. Curing agent is utilized toemulsify the retardant modified epoxy resin directly and it can eliminate the need for the resinaqueous modified link and retain more reactive epoxy group that could give the filter paperbetter physical strength and improved the nitrogen content of the system.Thirdly, the research of different resin system impregnated filter paper. This experimenttry to used the water-based resin and curing agent, curing agent emulsify retardant modifiedresin emulsion, the emulsion compound melamine formaldehyde resin and water-based ureaformaldehyde resin system to impregnate filter paper. Bursting strength tester, tensile strengthtester, stiffness tester, air permeability tester, and sweep the surface electron microscopy wereused to characterize the physical strength, the structure and flame retardant properties of thefilter paper. The tests suggest that the obtained modified resin emulsion can be given goodphysical properties to the filter paper and can be used to mix with other nitrogen-containingresin to impregnated filter paper which can provide the effective flame retardant properties tothe filter paper.
