Ultraviolet crosslinking polyethylene is a new type crosslinked method.Itcompared with the other crosslinking methods has some advanced properties.First,the ultraviolet light source has lower energy. Second, the equipment is easy to haveand low investment costs. Third, the equipment has easy operation and protection.Therefore, ultraviolet crosslinking polyethylene has acquired more and moreattention. This method has been put into use the10kV cable production. Toimproving this method, we must research its basic characteristics.The basiccharacteristics include the optical absorption properties and basic electricalproperties.This thesis adopts comparative study method. Through comparing eachsample’s characteristics that include ultraviolet crosslinked、hyperoxide crosslinkedpolyethylene and pure polyethylene to study their characteristics. Then we can findthe basic characteristics of ultraviolet crosslinked polyethylene. Three samples’optical absorption properties study is about absorptance and transmittance fordifferent wavelengths of ultraviolet. Through studing to find the range ofwavelengths which is suitable for UV crosslinking. This is the basic theory forensuring the best wavelength. The electric properties study compared with the basicelectric characteristics about three samples. By means of studing to find the electriccharacteristics about UV crosslinked polyethylene. The electrical properties includedielectric strength,volume resistivity,dielectric,spectrum,space charge distributionand electrical tree growth.Through the comparative study, this pape find that the range of wavelengths are320nm-330nm which is the best range for ultraviolet crosslinking. The ultraviolet crosslinked polyethylene can absorb much ultraviolet in this range. And itstransmittance can reach eighty percent. According these we can ensure the range ofwavelengths. But compared with the other samples. Its dielectric strength,volumeresistivity and dielectric spectrum are not different. But the space charge distributionand electrical tree growth are better than the other samples. That may be the effectionof the byproducts in the ultraviolet crosslinked polyethylene.
