There are special advantages for3D brading to manufacture textile composite materials,and it is helpful to enhance materials’ mechanical properties. Compared with four-step3Dbraiding, two-step3D braiding is more developed and widely applied in manufacturing, andfour-step3D braiding is limited because of the braiding machines. Especially in themanufacturing of variable sections3D braiding preforms, due to changing thicknesses, it isnecessary to reduce and increase yarns while braiding. The yarn carriers of traditionaltrack-and-column braiding machine move by the way of rows and lines, and it is hard to solvethe problem of yarn-reducing and yarn-increasing.Devoting to solve the problem, a new opinion of active yarn carrier has been put forward,namely, the carrier is attached with drive device. In that case, the yarn carrier is more movableand can move by itself and by groups as well. A model of active yarn carrier based on newlinear motor has been given, and the Ansoft Maxwell simulation of drive force has been doneto validate the design. Also, the paper provides some design of appendix devices.At last, the flow of yarn-reducing and yarn-increasing by active yarn carriers have beengiven, and then analysis of numerical relationship while braiding variable sections has beendone.
