A piece of rough and rectangle glass is firstly cut into blocks of different size and shape onthe principle of minimum raw material wasting.. Then blocks are machined under five sequentialprocedures such as drilling, cutting, rough grinding, fine grinding and polishing. Compared withglass, the polishing wheel made up of epoxy resins or organics is characteristic of lower hardnessand thus easy to wear. Therefore, the radius of polishing wheel decreases continuously and therelative velocity at touch point between glass and polishing wheel decreases accordingly whichreduce the glass removal rate directly. At the same time, high curvature points or sharp cornersalong the tool path can bring overshooting and gouging which decrease machining accuracy andlower product quality. The key technology for control system of glass shaping machining isresearched to solve the above problems and supported by Zhejiang Provincial General IndustrialProgram(2009C31096). The main contents of this paper include the following aspects:1) Thevelocity control algorithm to guarantee limited fluctuation of relative velocity and machiningefficiency.2) The bin packing algorithm of raw glass cutting based on the principle of minimumraw material wasting.Firstly, velocity blending algorithm and linear acceleration/deceleration algorithm fordiscrete tool path used in numerical control system are researched. Based on cubic NURBScurve, the velocity control algorithm for glass shaping polishing is proposed. Experiment resultsshow that the proposed approach guarantees limited fluctuation of relative velocity at touch pointand makes velocity changing more smoothly. Academic paper Research on the Limited RelativeVelocity Fluctuation in Glass Shaping Polishing has been accepted in China MechanicalEngineering.Secondly, according to the actual size and required shape, the bin packing problems ofpacking circles, ellipses and rectangles are researched. Based on Best-Fit algorithm, strategyprofiles and sequence update functions for rectangles items are confirmed. Under penaltyfunction method and terminative condition, a bin packing algorithm for raw glass cutting on theprinciple of minimum raw material wasting is proposed. The results show that the modifiedBest-Fit algorithm provides better performance for improving utilization of raw material.Thirdly, five sequential procedures such as drilling, cutting, rough grinding, fine grindingand polishing are researched.
