Machining center is a high efficiency and automatic machine tool. At present, machining center has become the preferred manufacturing machinery, and it is applied by more and more users. Automatic tool changer is a very important part of machining center, and its structure and driving form affect time and efficiency of automatic tool changer. Traditional automatic tool changer’s driving form is hydraulic and pneumatic drive, but it has some disadvantage, such as long time, low efficiency and fixed movement regular. In order to improve these deficiencies, now globoidal cam automatic tool changer is widely used in the world.The cam mechanism of the globoidal cam automatic tool changer includes globoidal indexing cam and planar groove cam. The theory and method of design, and manufacturing of globoidal indexing cam are very special, so there is no mature and practical research system in our country. Globoidal cam automatic tool changer is almost all rely on import. In order to improve this situation, it is important and necessary to research the cam mechanism.In this paper, the cam mechanism of the globoidal cam automatic tool changer is mainly designed and researched.Firstly, according to analyze movement festure and work condition of the cam mechanism, logical movement regular is designed. In order to obtain good dynamics, the movement regular of manipulator is choosed from the common movement regular.Secondly, the surface equation of the globoidal indexing cam is established based on the conjugate surfaces theory. According to the geometry data of the globoidal indexing cam, the planar groove cam is designed. In the end, kinematics analysis of the whole cam mechanism is done.Thirdly, the whole cam mechanism is designed using SolidWorks software and COSMOSMotion of SolidWorks. Then, setting motion parameters according to work characteristic of globoidal cam automatic tool changer. Finaly, kinematics simulation of the whole cam mechanism is finished.Finally, the manufacturing process of cam is researched and materials and manufacturing methods of cam are determined. It is difficult to manufacture globoidal cam, so all tool path of globoidal cam manufacturing process are calculated using Matlab, which establishes the foundation for manufacturing globoidal cam.
