Associating with the National Science and Technology Major Project, the National NaturalScience Funds and requirements from aviation manufacturing industry, in the view of the greatload of manually fitting of compound surfaces in aircraft structural parts during NC programmingand the control of precision of surface fitting, and to address the problem of the unstable rotation ofthe tool axis of the tool path generated by a commercial CAM software, a new approach togenerate the side milling tool path of compound surfaces in aircraft structural part is deeply studied.The main fruits of this paper are as follows:1) An approach of fitting of compound surfaces in aircraft structural parts is presented.Combination mode of compound surfaces in aircraft structural parts is summarized and classified.In the view of complicated combined surfaces with large curvature, the surfaces are fitted in themethod of B-Spline interpolation, the precision becomes controllable in the use of error analysisand the application of iterative method. In the view of compound surfaces with a small curvature inone parameter direction, a ruled surface is constructed to approach the compound surfaces, in theuse of error analysis and alternation of surface fitting approach, the precision is ensured.2) An approach of the generation of side milling tool path base on overall tool axis control andlocal fine adjustments is developed. In the use of the angle interpolation approach, the tool axisrotates stably, and the manufacturing accuracy is enhanced through local fine adjustments. Themachine error is analyzed and the error reduction means are discussed. Automatic generation ofside milling tool path of compound surfaces in aircraft structural parts is realized.3) Base on the research above, a system of automatic generation of side milling tool path ofcompound surfaces in aircraft structural parts base on surface fitting method is developed, whichhas been applied in an aircraft manufacturing corporation and proved effective.
