The calculation formulas of axial compression members and compression-bendingmembers are provided in Code for design of steel structures (GB50017-2003). But atpresent, there is less study on hot-rolled cut T-section struts, especially for the largeslenderness ratio hot-rolled cut T-section struts. More experimental study and theoreticalanalysis are needed to verify whether the calculation formulas of the GB code are validfor hot-rolled cut T-section struts. The overall stability capacity of large slenderness ratio (λy>100) hot-rolled cutT-section struts was systematically studied. Material experiment for the hot-rolled cutT-section struts used in the experiment was conducted. Experiments are conducted onthree large slenderness ratio hot-rolled cut T-section struts with identical length, the loadpoint is the shear center, the centroid, the middle point of shear center and centroidrespectively. The ultimate bearing capacity, failure mode, data of strain anddisplacement were obtained from the experimental study. The ABAQUS finite elementpackage was used to carry out nonlinear finite element analysis including initial bendingand residual stress based on the material test results. Through the contrast analysis withthe experiments, the result showed that the finite element model was accurate. A lot ofnonlinear finite element analysis had been carried out for more large slenderness ratiohot-rolled cut T-section struts. The ultimate bearing capacity, the failure mode, the stressdistribution and displacement were obtained from the nonlinear finite element analysis. The calculation formulas of stability theory and the GB code (GB50017-2003) wereused to calculate the ultimate bearing capacity of hot-rolled cut T-section struts. Thecalculating results agree well with experimental and theoretical ones. The influence of initial bending and residual stress had also been studied. It is concluded that the calculation formulas of axial compression members andcompression-bending members provided in Code for design of steel structures(GB50017-2003) are valid for large slenderness ratio hot-rolled cut T-section struts.
