Z-shaped column is widely used in the structure of residential architecture in china, but currently, researches on Z-shaped column are insufficient, and correlative conclusions are absent. Therefore, there is no unified design method in engineering field. Based on the experiment study and theoretical analysis of Z-shaped column under the load which is horizontal to the flange, this dissertation reveals shear failure mechanism and discipline of Z-shaped column for us. It also provides us with the design method which can be used in practical engineering.Firstly, the shear-resistant carrying capacity experiment of Z-shaped column was carried out, through the synthetic analysis on both crack expanding condition and failure modes, the shear failure mechanism and shear failure discipline are studied, the ductility discrepancy between Z-shaped column and other specially shaped columns and between Z-shaped column and rectangular-shaped column was obtained, the factors such as: axial compression ratio, stirrup reinforcement ratio and ratio of section height to section thickness of column 1eg,which affect the shear-resistant carrying capacity of Z-shaped column, was preliminary analyzed. Secondly, based on the results of experiment, the nonlinear finite element calculation was carried out, a further study was accomplished on the effect of those influential parameters which contained axial compression ratio, stirrup reinforcement ratio and shear span ratio. Conclusions can be drawn as following: compression-shear failure, shear-bending failure,bending failure were three main failure modes of Z-shaped column, the most important factor which affected failure mode and ductility capacity was shear span ratio, flange provided most part of shearing-resistant carrying capacity when Z-shaped column subjected to the load horizontal to the flange. Lastly, the calculation method about shear-resistant carrying capacity was studied according to the experiment results and finite element numerical simulation results. The regression formula from the experiment and numerical simulation results,and the design formula were obtained. Some suggestions respect to practical engineering were presented for the reference of structure designer.
