To investigate the cracking mechanics of super high arch dam is one ofthe important research fields of hydraulic structure. It is significant also forengineering study. In this thesis, two super high arch dams, Xiluodu andXiaowan project located in southwest China, are taken as examples to studythe cracking issues during design and construction stage. Four methods,namely,three-dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis, geomechanicmodel tests, engineering analogy analysis and back analysis, are applied inthis research. The main contents are as follows:(1)Based on a detailed investigation on cracking issues of several typicalhigh arch dam at home and abroad, the common cracking classificationstandards and cracking mechanism are summarized. By comparing the prosand cons of current cracking analysis methods, it is demonstrated that a jointapplication of multi-method is necessary.(2)By employing a FEM code, DFPA(Dam Failure Process Analysis)afine mesh model of Xiluodu high arch dam with more than3million elementsis established to conduct the three-dimensional nonlinear finite elementcracking analysis. The cracking process of large dam is simulated. software.(3)Based on four geomechanic model tests of Xiaowan high arch dam,thecracking mechanism of dam is analyzed under over-loadingcondition.moreover, the influence of cracking on the integrity stability of thedam are also studied.(4)CoMPare Xiluodu and Xiaowan projects with respect to their damcharacteristics, temperature control measures, crown cantilevers and the finiteelement analysis results, cracking risk, the cracking reason of Xiaowanarch dam can provide a reference for the construction of Xiluodu on controlcracking of dam.(5)By back analyzing on observed displacement happened in grouting process and equivalent grouting pressure in Xiluodu Project, a best time forfillet grouting is proposed and adopted by project owner, which avoid thecracking risk Because of grouting uplift of block of downstream.
