With the rapid economic development, the transport has a large development. As a green tansport, electric vehicles (EV) have a large potential and developable space. Electric bicycles (E-bikes) oflow-power possess the merits of convenience and economy, so they are the ideal transport methods. To ensure the excellent performance of electric bicycles, the drive motor should have thefollowing features: high efficiency, wide speed range, high speed, large starting torque, and small sizeof the weight. The switched reluctance motor (SRM) has the above characteristics. Thus, the use ofswitched reluctance motor for electric bicycle drive motor is an ideal viable option. In this paper, according to the user’s demand, it suggests a SRM whose rated power is400W,rated speed is550r/min. It addresses the following events: plant structure, the main power circuit andcontroller. The paper is to offer a design basis for in-wheel switched reluctance motor employed inelectric bicycle hub motor.Firstly, a three-phase24/16structure motor and a four-phase24/18structure motor areintroduced. Then, a better motor structure is selected by the comparion of starting torque, overload, efficiency of rated operating point and efficiency curves with the help of finite element analysis. Thestator pole shape is optimized. Secondly, for the application, it selects the split converter of nocapacitor as the main circuit topology. The dynamics model based on MATLAB/SUMLINKnonlinearity inductance model and Ansoft finite element model is built. The split converter and thesplit converter of no capacitor are contrasted the performance of middle voltage, phase current andoutput torque. The parameter optimization of the electric mode is carried out. Accordingly, voltagePWM speed control strategy which is appropriate for the experiment sample is educed. Finally, thesystem is implemented by digital control chip dsPIC30f3011and GAL16V8. The No-Load and Loadtest on the system is examed. It can be concluded that the proposed switched reluctance motor drivesystem has good steady speed performance, and can be widely used in electric bicycles.
