Funing is located in the east of Hebei province and northwest of Qinhuandao, inthe south of which is Bohai Sea and the north is Yanshan Great Wall nearby. Funing is atraffic throat from north China to the northeast since ancient times and its terrain isdangerous,it’s vital importance for the military.The traditional settlements’ formation and development within the region along theGreat Wall in Funing are inseparable with the history of the Great Wall, in the MingDynasty’s middle and last phase, because of the construction of the Great Wall, theGuancheng and Baocheng with the military function began to form, after the Mingperish, along with the disappearing of the Great Wall’s defense function, the Guanchengand Baocheng had gradually evolved as natural settlements. In the process ofconstruction and defending the Great Wall, the Ming Dynasty’s court continuouslymobilized more than twelve thousand Yiwu soldiers, then these people born and livedhere and nowadays forming the north "Yiwu Village" in the region along the Great Wallin Funing. These traditional settlements are influenced by the multi-cultural, thearchitectures are presented in some artistic features with the harmonious beauty, themassive and the ordered beauty, the blending beauty with the north and south.This paper’s study is based on the field investigation of the traditional settlementsin the region along the Great Wall in Fuxing county of Qinhuandao. This paper isdivided into seven chapters. Chapter one: a brief introduction about the topic of thepaper, research situation, research significance, research object and so on; chapter two:describing the natural environment and the social environment in the locality; chapterthree, chapter four, chapter five: analyzing the basic characteristics of traditionalsettlements, traditional dwelling and architectural details; chapter six: discussing theinspiration for architecture theory and protection and renewal strategy for the localityfrom analyzing traditional dwelling in the region along the Great Wall in Funing, alldiscussions in four aspects: thinking and comparison with cross-regional residential,thinking with protection and renewal of traditional dwelling, the inspiration for thecreation of ecological building and the modern regional architecture from analyzingtraditional dwelling;chapter seven: summarizing the research results and puttingforward further research directions.In short, the value that in-depth study of the traditional dwelling in the region along the Great Wall in Funing is in many aspects, its particular historical background,profound human connotations and richest historical heritage are extremely important toexpand knowledge in the architecture and human geography of the Great Wall.
