With the development of society and economy, human’s demand for large-scalecivil engineering structure is growing rapidly. However, the threat faced by human ismore and more serious. Therefore, it is hoped that the civil engineering structureperceive the state of external environment in self-sensing way, then respond timely tothe state of self-sensing. Nowadays, due to the advantages of quick response, goodreversible, wide dynamic range, damping device based on the Magneto-rheological(MR)technology is particularly suitable for intelligent control in the civil engineeringstructure.The MR damper is a kind of controllable device with the working medium ofmagnetorheological fluid. And it has been widely used in the field of vibration control,such as building structure and automobile. In practical application process, in order tomake the coil of the MR damper produce two-way magnetic field and change the rangeof the damping force, this paper presents the design and implementation methods oftwo-way driving for the MR damper.The system uses controller chip ARM7as the corepart, power electronics and modern control theory are also applied to complete thedesign of two-way driving device.First of all, this article introduces the MR damper, including the MR fluid, the MReffect and the application of the MR damper in practical engineering. And the two-waydriving method of the MR damper is introduced, including the structure and principle ofH-type bridge chopper, the choice of modulation. According to the design requirementof the system, the design program of two-way driving based on the platform ofcontroller chip ARM7is proposed.Secondly, the paper explains the design of the two-way driving in detail, includingthe design of hardware and software platform. According to the function andcharacteristic of every module, the modular design method is adopted and theschematic design of hardware platform is completed. The design of software system isbased on the hardware platform, and the software functions are classified, includingdata acquisition, PWM signal generation, current PID control and LED display. At thesame time, it is completed by C programming language in the Keil environment, whichguarantees the efficiency and maintainability of two-way driving device’s the softwaresystem. Finally, the entire system has been tested based on the design of hardwareand software platform. The experimental results show that: according to a controlvoltage in the direction and magnitude, the two-way driving device can output timelythe corresponding size and direction current for the MR damper, And the current islinear and controllable. Meanwhile, the device has the characteristics of quick response,convenient operation, timely display,which meets the applications of the MR damper.
