Yi is one of the seven ethnic minorities in China, which has a long history and richcultural accumulation, plays an important role of our national culture as well. Yisettlements are mainly located in China’s Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou provinces.Liangshan Prefecture, Sichuan, is China’s largest Yi settlements, which has kept slaverysocial characteristics until the establishment of the State. Its special History records thereproduction and change of Yi culture, which is a typical example of minority areas inChina to deal with the development of modern cities.In the wave of globalization, the architectural design of the Liangshan region isfacing the dual challenges of regionalization and globalization. On the one hand,western culture and modern advanced techniques are widely used; on the other hand,Yi original villages, protection and development of the national style and the traditionalarchitecture of the local Yi culture has been highly concerned with a kind of obviousdiversity. Local design tries to discover its own characteristics in the process of ragingcultural influx. How to grasp the cultural connotation and find the road of developmentof national buildings in Liangshan becomes an important issue which needs to besolved.Analyzing the Liangshan traditional architecture based on a contextual perspective,this article tries to find the dominant expression factor and recessive expression factorof the Liangshan traditional architectural expression. Liangshan Yi buildings have beeninfluenced by topographical features, climate, and environment. At the same time, inLiangshan traditional society, the characteristics of social composition based on homeunits, and the religious beliefs based on Ancestral worship, nature worship, Bimoculture, has also influenced Liangshan Yi architectural context and become the cultureof origin of Liangshan buildings. As objective vectors of these contextual factors,traditional architectures provide a good evidence for composition and impact of thesecontextual factors.Second, Liangshan Yi context of valuation will also be evaluated from the history,culture, aesthetics, and economics perspectives. The Liangshan traditional architecturalcontext of practical significance in modern society will also be analyzed, which willprovide an accurate positioning for the constitute of traditional context.In the urban development of Liangshan Prefecture, there appears a lot of problems, such as, inappropriate expression of national characteristics, superficial national spiritand too heavy attach to the context and development of tourism projects. Based on thecontradiction between the context and urban development, this article proposesplanning for traditional architectural context of conservation, advocates a modernexpression for new cultural connotation and design techniques with differences,harmony, wideness and evaluation, which means distinctive national style, harmoniousrelationship with the environment, diverse methods of expression, and learningadvanced construction techniques. The construction of this theoretical system has beenbased on the characteristics of the continuous development of context, which alsomeans an expression of multiculturalism.Finally, with the establishment of theoretical system of Liangshan context, theaccurate context countermeasures and compounds road of Liangshan Yi buildings willalso be discussed.This article proposes a theoretical framework from the contextual perspective,which is a kind of study mode of the development of Liangshan Yi buildings andLiangshan city, and hope that it will provide a reference for the research of buildingdevelopment in the same type of regions.
