With the rapid development of information technology, concurrent engineering(CE) has been researched and applied by more and more enterprises and industry areas. The purposes of CE are shortening the development time, improving the product quality and reducing the cost of product development. Project products are suitable for using CE production mode because of that they are individual production or small serial production products. Iteration and overlapping are two important issues in the implementation of CE in project product development, and they are the focus of research in this paper. The basic theory, features and related support technologies of CE were introduced in this paper firstly. The reasons of invalid-iteration and management strategy were analyzed. Process modeling theory and methods were introduced, and the models of sequential and concurrent design process were built and described based on software witness and petri nets. Simulation time and busy rate of each task-stage of the design process were obtained by simulation-run under three different conditions and given parameters. The analysis of data shows that there are more advantages in concurrent design than in sequential design. The influences of overlapping in concurrent design were researched, and the computation formulas of concurrent degree and overlapping degree were given combined with the downstream start-up time mathematical model. The effectiveness and feasibility of the formulas were verified based on example calculation, and methods to improve concurrency in product development were given. The study has a guidance both in theory and practice in improving development speed and quality of project product, and also in lowering the cost of product design and process.
