At present, the Very Large Crude Oil Carrier is a main ship type in crude oil transportation, which has a great inertia, the wind deflection is unusual. Vessel’s speed cannot maintain rudder’s effect when maneuvering in the harbor; it is difficult to berth safely without tugs. Especially, when downstream berthing, the intersection angle of channel and berth direction too larger and some harbors safety performance require highly and berth’s water confined, at this time, the role of tugs is more obvious. Based on the domestic and foreign research data, the paper study that VLCC turning berthing maneuvering with tug assistance, consider to the characteristics of wind deflection, established a comparatively accurate and complete mathematical model of VLCC by absorbing the ideas of MMG. The calculation model of tug’s force is obtained through the analysis of interaction between the tug and the vessel and the tug’s propeller work quadrant when moving with the vessel. Then, write the programs for simulation of the VLCC maneuvering mathematical model with the assistance of the tugs in the harbor with Mat-lab language, make simulation of vessel’s turning ability in shallow water without effect of the wind and current, prove the model accuracy by comparing with the result of trials.In order to research the motion of the full loading VLCC turning berthing, based on the established model, the paper makes simulation of the full loading VLCC speed control, turning and parallel berthing under the influence of different wind and current in shallow water, and quantitatively and qualitatively analyze the maneuvering main points. The wind deflection of the full loading VLCC, the method of speed control and the reasonable speed are obtained, the turning time and water under different ship speed, and the influence of turning process under different wind and current are obtained, how to control the yawing of ship when berthing. Finally, investigate an example of the full loading VLCC turning berthing maneuvering with tugs assistance under the influence of wind and current. In addition, the handling step and motion parameter in the whole process are obtained. This research is for the office and pilot find out the maneuvering specific property of VLCC easily. It has some significance refer to the VLCC turning berthing maneuvering in working. Moreover, it provides some references for the safety assessment of the channel and dock designed of3×105ton VLCC, it also provides a theoretical foundation to navigation simulator research and development.
