During the construction of concrete cutoff walls, to keep the stability of the trench wall is the key to success. However, due to the many quite complex influen-cing factors which the people to the understanding is not enough, the trough wall sta-bility issues still need to continue to depth. At present, the main methods to study the stability of trench wall are the field test method, the model test method, the limit equilibrium method and finite element method. The finite element method can more real reflect the influence of pore water, and is free from the limitations of the model geometry and complex constitutive model. The calculation results are more close to reality. So it has good prospects for development. In this paper, the dam slot process simulation analysis will be based on the finite element method. Considering the effects of pore water pressure, with a project exam-ple as the background, the distribution of the internal stress, strain and displacement field of the dam during the process of slotting were analyzed in this paper. A new method to evaluate the stability of trench wall was proposed. This method will open up a new way for researching the wall stability problem. The mainly researched work in this paper is as follows:1) The current research methods on the stability of the trench wall were summa-rized, and the advantages and disadvantages of these methods were compared.2) In order to describe the method, a slotting process on level ground with the finite element software ABAQUS was simulated. Reducing the pressure of mud can calculate the critical density of the mud which keeps the groove wall limit equili-brium state. The result was compare d with that of the limit equilibrium method. The comparison results shown that the method is feasible.3) A dam slot process was simulated. The stress and strain of the dam body and displacement field distribution in the slotting process were obtained. The displace-ment trend of the dam during the slotting process was analyzed in this paper.4)With the critical mud density as control indexes, the main factors affecting the stability of the tan wall were analyzed.
