With the continuous development of tourism industry in our country in recent years, many historicaland cultural cities redesign and rearrange their historic heritages into landscapes for tourists to meet theneed of tourism and economy. Development and use of historical culture to strengthen the tourism industrynot only play a significant role in promoting economic development, but also become the window throughwhich people of the world understand China’s history and culture.How to design and reconstruct the historical sites of great historical value in the environment of rapidsocio-economic and tourist development has become a widespread concern. Many historically andculturally notable cities speed up their development of historical heritages to attract more visitors. However,due to over development, lack of study on the historical culture in the design and construction, andimperfect protection measures, there is a hidden danger for the future destruction and even loss of thehistorical culture. So designers must examine how to plan and design the whole landscape environment inthe proper development of historical and cultural sites.Historically and culturally notable cities are rich in historical sites with significant historical andcultural value and revolutionary meaning. Their special history and culture were gradually formed anddeveloped with the development of the society. Therefore, designers of the landscape of such cities musttake into consideration the application of history and culture since people are not only satisfied with thematerial needs now with the development of their living conditions. People pay more attention to theirspiritual needs, among which cultural needs are one part and also one important element of improvinglandscape.Hanzhong Area is well-known as the birthplace of the Chinese culture, rich with the cultural elementsof Dong Han, Xi Han and the Three Kingdoms. It has more one hundred cultural relics at all levels. Underthe big wave of the development of the historical sites and tourism industry, Hanzhong Area does the sameby applying its rich historical and cultural advantages. With the development of tourism, more and morevisitors come. The protection of the landscape encounters more pressure, and the design and construction ofthe new landscapes more challenges. Based on the analysis of landscape design of Hanzhong Area, this thesis centres on the arrangement ofthe whole landscape. Firstly, it states the problems of the present landscape design. There are many historicrelics, which scatter in different places without mutual connection. The designers of the landscape are shortof communication, so they sometimes have the same design leading to unnecessary economic loss.Therefore, the landscape designers of historically and culturally notable cities should have a holistic senseof the historical and cultural features and the geographical and environmental features, including theecological environment, the regional culture, the development of the city and their relationship becauselandscape design not only uses but also protects the history and the culture. Secondly, the thesis refines thecultural elements, trying to arrange and construct some historic relics as a systematic unity. Due to the shortknowledge of the designers of the history and culture of Hanzhong Area, restrictions of economic andtechnological measures and improper administration, there arise losses of some historical culture in thelandscape design and imbalance of ecological environment. The lack of accessible design is a commonproblem in the landscape design though the design should consider all the citizens, including the old, theweak and the disabled.To solve these problems, the thesis puts forward some methods and strategies of landscape design ofhistorically and culturally notable cities from the current perspective of protecting and developing historyand culture. The designer should first determine the theme of the landscape. He should define the themecontent of the landscape. Then he should decide the space distribution and create the whole space inaccordance with visual art on the principle of landscape content. At last he should create specific pointsaccording to the theme by using traditional and modern aesthetic points of view.It is hoped that the landscape development of the Hanzhong Area can be improved and perfectedthrough this study. The historical and cultural landscape can be better protected while being used. It is alsohoped that this study can provide a theoretical basis and reference for the landscape construction of otherhistorical and cultural cities.
