The Aeolian vibration on transmission lines can easily cause damage to the lines and the electric power fittings. With the large-scale construction of high-voltage transmission lines in China, the Aeolian vibration is prone to occur due to the increasing of the line diameter, the gravity per length and the suspended height. The destruction of Aeolian vibration comes from long time accumulation, and is with strong concealment, so the damage that caused by Aeolian vibration is impossible to be identified by directly observe, so the power department is badly needed in a device that can monitor the vibration of transmission lines to master the vibration status and fatigue degree.ZigBee is a new short-distance, low-cost, low-rate wireless communication technology, which is widely used in industrial control, wireless location, home network and other fields. In this paper, a monitoring system for transmission lines Aeolian vibration based on ZigBee wireless communication technology is developed. The system can not only monitor the vibration status real-time but also estimate the lines fatigue degree through the analysis of the field data, thus the power department can discover the potential instable transmission line timely and take corresponding measures to prevent conductor fatigue to ensure the safe operation of power equipment. The main work in this paper is as follows:(1) Firstly, the mechanism, the measuring theory and method of Aeolian vibration is introduced, and the estimation method of fatigue life for overhead transmission lines is analyzed according to Miner’s cumulative fatigue theory and Wohler’s safe boundary;(2) Secondly, The technology character of ZigBee is studied, and then the structure of ZigBee protocol stack and the main function of each layer are discussed. In practice, the network configuration, topological structure and application field of ZigBee is explored;(3) The overall design of the Aeolian vibration monitoring system was introduced, and the hardware circuit of this system was accomplished, which contained microprocessor, power supply module, reset circuit, JTAG interface, GPRS communication module and the wireless ending monitoring module, etc;(4) The software development of base station was finished, including the program of meteorological data acquisition, GPRS communication module, building of ZigBee wireless network and ZigBee coordinator, terminal nodes; finally, the expert software of monitoring center was introduced briefly.
