With the rapid development of society and economy, human’s demand for energy has been increasing since the1970s. The pressure from energy and environment is also growing. In order to effectively solve the issues like energy supply and environmental pollution, many countries around the world strive to develop renewable energy technologies. As a rich renewable energy, wind energy has become a focus in the research field of renewable energy. The main form of wind energy utilization is wind farm. The main parts of this article are how to more effectively assess the wind energy resource and how to provide the scientific basis for the siting of wind farms. The data of wind resource is relatively large, which is influenced by geographic factors. Geographic information system (GIS) has powerful features on data processing, data analysis, data visualization and cartographic output. With the application of GIS in the field of the wind resource, the wind resource data will be managed, analyzed and displayed better when searching for a scientific basis for the feasibility of wind farms.Firstly, the data of Dalian wind measurement towers is collected and the wind speed is analyzed with the corresponding national standard in this paper. Secondly, the calculations of10m&65m wind speed and wind power density are obtained, and after that geostatistical analysis and normal QQPlot of wind energy resources are got by ArcGIS software. Then the inverse distance weighted interpolations of10m&65m wind speed and wind power density are completed. Finally, the feasibility of wind farms in Dalian are analyzed according to the inverse distance weighted interpolations. The innovation of this paper is to introduce the wind resource data into the geographic information system. By a strong advantage in data processing and spatial analysis of geographic information system, more effective management analysis and visual output of wind energy resource can be done. Inverse distance weighted interpolation maps of the wind energy resources provide a scientific basis for the feasibility of wind farms in Dalian.
