HTS cables transmission technology can overcome the inherent defect ofconventional copper core cables. HTS power technology will greatly improvetransmission capacity of power grid.and stability of power system operation based on thesuperconductor special electrical properties. In addition,it will reduce the loss during thetransmission with broad development prospects. This paper focuses on thecurrent-carrying distribution and optimization design of HTS cables.It is key to researchon structure characteristics of HTS cables,current distribution and optimization design ofcable model systematicly.Firstly,it st ates the basic characteristics of HTS and the research progress ofsuperconducting strips Besides,grid situation of HTS cables transmission technology athome and abroad and economic significance of HTS cables are also elaborated..There aresome problems during HTS cables carrying current.HTS cables have the electromagneticparameters and structure parameters.Structure parameters have influence on currentdistribution,including the direction of winding,the degree of winding and the radius ofevery layer.Current amplitude of every layer can be calculated by MATLAB.It proves thatcurrent distribution is uniform when the degree of winding is big; total current ofconductor layers is larger and current distribution of every layer is not even when theradius of every layer is bigger and vice versa.HTS cables model can be established by ANSYS/EMAG.It proves that pplpinsulating layer bear less electric field strength when it is thicker.But,it will increase theproduction cost of cable when increase the thickness of PPLP insulating layer.Inaddition,the value of thickness of PPLP insulating layer should be13mm,which iseconomic and reliable,entering110kV power frequency voltage.Optimization variables,target function and constraint conditions are key to HTScables optimization design model on the basis of the above analysis.The optimal solutionof target function and the optimal value of structure parameters can be obtained based onGenetic Algorithm.It tests that inductance value of HTS cables be optimized reducesgreatly and uniformity of current among layers increases considerably based on ATP.Itcould improve current-carrying capacity of HTS cables and reduce the AC loss.
