Study On Garden Art Of Cuijin Garden

Cui Jin Yuan is the garden of Prince Gong’s Mansion, since Qianlong period, this residence has been occupied by He Shen, Prince Qing and his offspring, and Prince Gong and his offspring. It has a history of over200years, but the culture of the garden has been impacting the society, reflected in the saying "A Mansion of Prince Gong tells half the history of the Qing Dynasty." Cui Jin Yuan was impacted by the society in every way, and is a classic case of a prince’s mansion garden of the time, in terms of the overall layout, the structure, the tour line, the function parts and even to the very detailed thoughts put into the garden’s making.This thesis aims to analyze the Cui Jin Yuan based on historical study done about it, but the author also includes some on-site measurement and data analysis of his/her own. The focus of this thesis is to study the design principles behind the garden, and compare the layouts of its prime time to the current one. Based on that, it also will provide an in-depth analysis on the layout and the logic behind it. Finally, it seeks the historical and artistic root of it and form a conclusion of the achievements of the garden.The creative point of this thesis is that it does not just analyze the artistic side of the garden. Every great garden carries history and culture behind it and the people should pay more respect to the history and culture, therefore the thesis digs out the charm of the garden and not just judge it on the current condition. Also, it is a warning call to all the other artists that ancient gardens are not isolated islands. They deserve more attention and more credit, due to its profound impact on the Chinese culture.
