With the continuous expansion of the city and the high-speed growth of the traffic demand in recent years, traffic congestions take place more frequently. The main technical reasons contributing to the phenomenon are that the configuration of traffic signal is not reasonable and the coordination and optimization is also insufficient in the road intersections. Through the improvement of the traffic management measures, especially the optimization of the signal timing in the road intersections, the clear and safety of the city thoroughfare can be effectively enhanced. In this paper, we focus on the signal timing of the road intersection. Compared to the previous works, our main contributions can be summarized as follows:1) Our paper summarizes the research works on the signal timing in the road intersection and the traffic simulations in domestic in the first part of this paper. Then the basic theoretical knowledge of traffic light signal control and the parameters analysis are presented. In addition, the pros and cons and the theoretical basis of the configuration of traffic light signal control are stated in this part.2) Our paper has put forward a multi-objective and joint optimization signal timing method based on the analysis of the classic models. The average-delay, queue length and transportation capacity are quoted as the performance index parameters to minimize the utility index of the weight divided three. Through the simulations, our method is superior to the Webster method and HCM method.3) Our paper improves the existing signal timing schemes by applying the Synchro software to calculate the morning peak, flat peak and evening peak of the signal timing schemes in the XUEYUAN South Rd and Jiaotong University East Rd intersections. Then the Vissim software is adopted to simulate and evaluate the result on the average-delay, queue length and transportation capacity. The consequence is more superior.
