With the problem of oil shortages, environmental pollution, the greenhouse effect worsening, electric vehicles (EVs) will be the future of the automotive industry because of its advantages of low consumption and low pollution. Governments and relevant enterprises have invested substantial human and material resources on EVs with the purpose of mitigating the dual pressures of the resources and the environment when the large-scale promotion of EVs realized. At the same time, the impact of EVs connected to the grid has also become a hot issue of concern. There is no doubt that a significant negative impact on grid would be caused when directly connected large amount of EVs into the grid without some control. However, as a special kind of load with large battery capacity, its energy storage property has gradually caused attention. That is, the EVs are considered to be both a transportation tool and a distributed energy storage unit. They can not only get electricity from the grid but also feed back to the grid when necessary. The paper focused on the point and made some explorations. This paper firstly analyzed the potential positive role of EVs on the grid:peak shaving, frequency modulation, serving as a new distributed energy unit and stabilizing the disturbance caused by the connection of new energy to the grid. And then compared with the traditional methods of peak shaving and frequency modulation to show the advantages of EVs’roles.Secondly, to the problems of peak shaving (flat load curve), the paper set up a mathematical optimization model based on the background of household smart micro-gird. And made case study based on a typical family under two conditions respectively:the initial power is certain, the initial power is unknown. Solving the model, we obtained the optimize solution for the best regulation effect under the above two conditions respectively, which displayed the large potential of EVs on peak shaving.Thirdly, a quantitative analysis of the energy loss caused by the EVs in the process of charging and discharging is made. And the additional energy loss caused by the participation in V2G services is also analyzed. Finally, some factors influencing the household peak regulation effect are analyzed, which can be used as a reference to provide V2G services for the EV owners.
