The geological prediction reduces the blindness of tunnel construction and avoids many unknown risks.GPR has characteristics of efficient, fast, convenient and low cost. The application of GPR in tunnel advanced prediction achieves the perfect combination of the application and economy. This article bases on the existing GPR theory and the corresponding electromagnetic wave propagation theory, establishes the Maxwell equations of the electromagnetic wave, summarizes the electromagnetic field characteristics, electromagnetic wave rule in space and time field, the dissemination rule of the electromagnetic waves in lossy medium. Through the analysis of the pulse wave’s law of propagation and attenuation in geotechnical medium, the paper summarises up the propagation rule of the GPR wave, explores how to use GPR take the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) data and deal with the data in the right way to obtain high accuracy forecast. On the other hand, the paper makes some discussion on GPR detection capability, parameter selection and other aspects, focuses on some important key issues for analysis such as vertical resolution, horizontal resolution and detecting depth. By using SIR-3000type of radar for relevant test, we combine with some field work experience to put forward some exist problems and provide reference for improving GPR working capacity.Because of the complex geological condition around the underground target, there is no significant progress for GPR data analysis and processing in domestic and foreign at present. In order to fundamentally solve this problem, we should study the suitable time-frequency analysis method. So in this paper, the existing several common time-frequency analysis method is discussed, the Fourier transform, the wavelet transformation and Hilbert-huang transform is expounded. We discuss the corresponding time-frequency analysis, analysis and compare the digital signal processing effect and their advantages and disadvantages, study these methods in GRR data processing through the project example to draw some suggestions.
