With the sharp increase of vehicle ownership in China, vehicle-pedestrian collisions and the consequent casualties are also increasing. In the collision between vehicle and pedestrian, the pedestrian’s head often collided with the front windshield of the vehicle, resulting in pedestrian’s serious injury or even death. Therefore, it is important to raise windshield’s energy absorption ability and reduce the pedestrian’s injury in the collision. In the purpose of protecting pedestrians’life safety and in reference to real experiments, the following aspects about laminated glass (windshield) have been investigated:Firstly, theoretical and numerical methods were used to determine the equivalent thickness formula of laminated glass, and the dynamic response of the laminated glass in collision process was analyzed. Then the distribution of interlaminar stresses in laminated glass was analyzed. The results indicated that, in collision process, the interlaminar shear stress was mainly on shear stress and the maximum shear stress was6.5MPa.Secondly, the relationship between the interfacial adhesive strength and the energy absorption ability of laminated glass was analyzed. An interfacial adhesive strength of7MPa and6MPa were recommended for PU and PVB laminated glass samples to achieve their best energy absorption ability and effectively reduce the peak acceleration of the impact object. And at the same time, the simulated glass cracking pattern was compared with others’ previous research works, and it was closer to the real situation. Finally, the collision between the pedestrian’s head and the front windshield was analyzed. An interfacial adhesive strength of7MPa was recommended by the simulation result to make the windshield get its best energy absorption ability and reduce the injuries to the pedestrian’s head.In summary, a conclusion was acquired:An appropriate interfacial adhesive strength can effectively enhance the windshield’s energy absorption ability and protect the pedestrian’s life safety. This conclusion was beneficial for the design and production of windshield.
