Virtual reality technology is an emerging discipline in the20th century which is based on classical theories such as physics and psychology, etc, and integrates multi frontier disciplines including3D projection display technology and space tracking technology, etc. It is based on reality rather than stick to reality and can give full play to one’s imagination and creativity. At present, virtual reality technology has been widely used in many fields, such as military, engineering, education, health, etc.Aiming at the problems faced by the practical training of tank troops, a tank virtual simulation training system by the use of virtual reality technology is designed. A virtual simulation training environment of tank which is based on parts of the real data of American Ml tank and cooperates with precise3D model, lifelike meteorological environment, explosion and flash effects is constructed. The system can implement the functions including driving, shooting, intelligent confrontation, command and monitoring, integrated assessment, etc.The system is mainly divided into two parts:model making and simulation implementation. The modeling making uses Creator and GL Studio software, and includes terrain model making, topography model addition, equipment entity model, instrument interface design and the use of texture maps. In the making process, the model library space is reduced effectively by the use of level of detail, instantiation and texture mapping. The interactive function is realized by adding code to part of the instrument interface model. The simulation implementation uses Vega Prime as a visual simulation platform and realizes simulation by coding in VS.NET2003environment. It mainly includes the construction of initialization scenes (such as the simulation of meteorological environmental factors, the generation of special effects and path planning, etc), the simulation of dynamics, fire control system and artificial intelligent. It can simulate the real tank running state, the whole process of the fire control system from finding the target to aim and shoot, and flexible movement strategy of formation and pathfinding.
