The sealability and service life of mechanical face seals aredetermined by the dynamic characteristics, and the dynamic stiffness anddamping coefficients of the auxiliary seal rings used in compensatoryconfiguration play a crucial role, affecting the tracing ability andcompensatory of the flexibly mounted stator or rotor. There is a lack ofinvestigation on dynamic characteristics of auxiliary seal rings. In thispaper, the dynamic characteristics of auxiliary seal rings are researched.The test units of O-ring and The Greene,Tweed Capped Rin(gCGT)have been designed. The axial and angular dynamic stiffness anddamping coefficients of the O-ring and CGT-ring used in compensatoryconfiguration of mechanical face seals have been gotten by relaxation testand data processing. The variations of both auxiliary seal rings dynamicstiffness and damping with the pressure, frequency and displacementunder different lubrication, have been analyzed. In the end, the curves ofboth auxiliary seal rings dynamic stiffness and damping changing with engine speed have been drawn. Based on previous theory calculationresults, the influences of grooves shape, compression and surfaceroughness have been analyzed.The problem that the dynamic characteristic parameters of auxiliaryseal rings are ignored when the dynamic characteristics of mechanicalface seals are researched is solved. To maintain the stability of the fluidmembrane, the dynamic characteristics of auxiliary seal rings used incompensatory configuration are got and well matched with the fluidmembrane stiffness, and the hop will appear in the auxiliary seal ringsand springs. It is beneficial to control the mechanical face seal leakageand has important practical significance.
