In the very time of fast development of world’s technology and world’s trend of globalization, we have to confess the fact that the common practice of seeking quick success and instant benefits in landscape architecture has become a more and more serious problem. In spite of this, Buddhism which exerts crucial influence to Chinese traditional culture, not only shapes the form of Chinese religious garden but also shows the demand of followers’to express their Humanism appeal. Making use of modern signs concept, this research analyses the construction of Buddhism garden which gives important theoretical and practical instructions for religious garden building and modern landscape architecture.Gardening elements are key object of this study. On one hand, basic concept, influential factors, evolutionary process of signs and understanding of signs’connotation are all fully discussed in this research; on the other hand, this research is organized on the basis of relevant theory such as:urban landscape, human engineering, Semiotics. Specially, Rhys language structure analysis method and Peel and symbols of the three points are cited as support theory.Field study was done at several temple of Buddhism styles such as Lingyin Temple in Hangzhou, Tanzhe Temple, Dadachu temple, Fayuansi Temple, and Yonghegong Temple in Beijing. A two-way classification is proposed with regard to the function of signs of gardening elements:single factor and composite factor. Single factor refers to the function of ornamental plant, Landscape outline, garden building and garden feature. With the discussion of those elements, this research generalizes three functional effects:pattern orientate, direction oriented and symbol oriented. At the end of this research, some constructive advice and key design points are proposed in relation with conservation of Buddhism temple garden and landscape design. Combining theory analysis and field investigation, this research gives insight into sign effects of gardening elements, and is hopefully of some value to landscape design of temple garden in the future.
